Quick answer

ITM hex (Allen-style) bit tips for socket-head and set screws, nine bits from 5/64" to 1/4". Most are 1" insert bits on a 1/4" hex shank; the larger sizes come on a 5/16" hex shank.

Choosing a hex driver bit

Hex bit tips drive socket-head cap screws and set screws, the small hex-drive fasteners found on hardware, fixtures and equipment. This range is all ITM: nine bits from 5/64" to 1/4". Six are 1" insert bits on a 1/4" hex shank in the small sizes. The 3/16", 7/32" and 1/4" sizes are 1-1/4" bits on a 5/16" hex shank.

Driving tips

A hex bit has to fit the socket exactly. Too small and it rounds the socket out, so try the bit in the screw before you power it. Blow or pick grit out of the socket first, push the bit all the way in and keep the driver square to the screw.

Start slow and use a low clutch setting so the bit does not spin out on the last turn. For pinned security screws, step over to the tamper-proof bits.

Common questions

What is the difference between the insert bits and the 5/16" shank bits?

The insert bits are 1" long on a 1/4" hex shank and cover 5/64" to 3/16". The 3/16", 7/32" and 1/4" hex bits are 1-1/4" long on a 5/16" hex shank, so your driver or holder must accept that larger shank.

Can I run these in an impact driver?

These shanks are listed as 1/4" hex and 5/16" hex, not impact. Use them in a drill/driver or hand driver at moderate torque. For impact work, look at the impact-shank Phillips, square and Torx bits.

How do I know which size I need?

Match the bit to the socket, not the screw thread. The bit should slide in with almost no play. A bit that rocks in the socket is too small and will round it out.
