Choosing a step drill

A step drill cuts a range of hole sizes with one bit, stepping up in diameter as you push it in. They suit sheet metal and other thin material, where a twist drill tends to grab or leave a ragged hole. The ITM range runs from single-step bits to 13 steps, with diameters from 1/8" up to 1-3/8". Seven are listed for electricians.

Most are M2 HSS. Three are M35 cobalt with a TiAlN coating. Ten have a self-centering 135° split point, and some have fast-spiral flutes. Two shanks: 3/8" hex, or 1/4" hex impact-ready.

Drilling tips

Use a low to medium speed and steady pressure, with cutting oil on steel. Let each step do its work, and stop at the size you need. Clamp thin metal so it cannot spin.

Common questions

What is a step drill used for?

Cutting clean holes in thin material like sheet metal, in a range of sizes with one bit. Each step cuts a larger diameter as you push the bit through.

M2 HSS or M35 cobalt?

Most are M2 HSS. Three are M35 cobalt with a TiAlN coating, which suits tougher metals and heavier use. Check the product page for the exact material.

Can I use a step drill in an impact driver?

Yes, if it is the 1/4" hex impact-ready version. Nine bits in this collection are. Check the shank before you buy.
