Choosing a deburring tool

Drilling leaves a raised burr on the exit side and a sharp edge at the entrance. A deburring tool takes both off in a second or two, which saves cut fingers and helps parts and fasteners seat properly. These seven Weldon tools have a 60° cutting angle.

Each tool covers a range of hole diameters, so one tool handles several drill sizes. Ranges run from 3/32" through 11/64" at the small end to 11/16" through 1-3/32" at the large end. Pick the tool whose range brackets your hole.

Using them

Run at low speed with very light pressure, and stop as soon as the edge is broken. Too much pressure, or too long, leaves a visible chamfer. Use cutting oil on steel. If you need a deeper cone for a screw head, see the 82° countersinks, which also list some 90° deburring tools.

Common questions

What does a deburring tool do that a countersink does not?

It breaks the edge lightly and quickly. A countersink cuts deep enough to seat a screw head. Use a deburring tool for clean, safe edges and a countersink when the fastener needs a recess.

How do I know which tool fits my hole?

Each title gives a hole range, for example 3/16" thru 13/32". Choose the tool where your hole falls inside that range. Ranges overlap a little, so you can pick the nearer centre.

Should I pick 60° or 90°?

At the same depth, a 60° tool cuts a narrower chamfer than a 90° tool. The 90° deburring tools are listed with the 82° countersinks if you want a wider edge break.
