Choosing an 82° countersink

An 82° countersink matches the head angle of standard inch flat-head screws, so the screw seats flush in a clean cone. This group is Weldon: countersinks by screw size (5/16" and 1/2" are two examples), pointless countersinks, and a few 90° deburring tools.

Pointless countersinks have no drill point, so they work on a hole you have already drilled. Each covers a range of hole sizes, from small ones like .073 through 15/64" to larger ones like .431 through 7/8". A screw-size countersink is simpler when you run one fastener all day.

Drilling tips

Go slow, with light pressure and cutting oil on steel. Countersink a little, test-fit the screw, and cut more only if you need to. The head should sit flush or just below the surface. If the tool chatters, cut the speed. If you only want to break a sharp edge, the deburring tools are the better choice.

Common questions

What does pointless mean?

A pointless countersink has no drill point. It is made to cut the cone on a hole you have already drilled, and each one covers a range of hole sizes, such as .307 through 25/32".

Will an 82° countersink fit metric screws?

Metric flat-head screws generally have a 90° head, so an 82° cut will not seat them fully. Use an 82° countersink for inch flat-head screws, and check the head angle on anything else.

Why are deburring tools listed here?

Some 90° deburring tools share this group. They break the sharp edge of a drilled hole rather than seat a screw head. The 60° deburring tools have their own collection.
