Choosing a security screw bit

Security screws are used on fixtures, signs and equipment that people should not be taking apart. This collection is the bits for them. It covers hex tamper bits in fractional sizes such as 3/32", 1/8", 9/64", 5/32" and 3/16". Torx tamper bits come in many T sizes, and there are Phillips tamper bits, Tri-Wing bits and spanner bits. Double-ended bits combine a Phillips tip with a slotted or second Phillips tip. Thirty of the 33 are on a 1/4" hex shank and three are on a 5/16" hex shank.

Driving tips

Identify the head before you order. Tamper heads look like their standard cousins with a center pin or hole, and Tri-Wing and spanner heads have their own shapes. A standard bit will not seat in them. Seat the bit fully, drive at low speed and keep the driver square so the small tip does not break.

Common questions

What is a tamper-proof bit?

It is a bit made for a security screw, one whose head has a pin or an unusual shape so a standard bit will not fit. Tamper Torx and tamper hex bits have a hole in the tip that clears the pin.

Can I use a regular Torx bit on a tamper Torx screw?

Only if the screw has no center pin, and then it is not a tamper screw. A standard Torx bit will not seat over the pin. Use a tamper Torx bit in the matching T size.

Are these bits for impact drivers?

Their shanks are listed as 1/4" hex and 5/16" hex, not impact. Use them in a drill/driver or hand driver at low to moderate torque.
