Hard Steel Drill Bits
ITM carbide-tipped drill bits for steel that stalls ordinary HSS bits, in right-hand and left-hand versions from 1/8" to 1/2". ANSI specification, plus 5-piece sets from 1/8" to 3/8".
Choosing a hard steel bit
These ITM bits have a carbide tip for drilling hardened steel and other material that dulls standard high-speed steel. Sizes run 1/8", 3/16", 1/4", 5/16", 3/8" and 1/2" in 3", 4" and 6" lengths, all to ANSI specification. Right-hand and left-hand versions are both offered, along with 5-piece sets from 1/8" to 3/8".
Drilling tips
Go slow. Hard steel needs low speed, firm steady pressure and cutting oil on the tip. Clamp the work and keep the drill square, because carbide is hard but brittle and a side load can chip the edge. These are not hammer-drill bits, so turn hammer action off.
Left-hand bits cut with the drill in reverse. Installers use them when they want a fastener to back out as they drill.

Common questions
What are hard steel bits for?
They have a carbide tip for drilling hardened steel and other material that stalls standard HSS bits. Use low speed, firm pressure and cutting oil.
What is the difference between left-hand and right-hand?
Right-hand bits cut with the drill running forward. Left-hand bits cut with the drill in reverse, which helps when drilling out a fastener that might otherwise tighten or stay put.
Can I use them in a hammer drill?
No. They are for rotary drilling in steel. Turn hammer action off, drill at low speed and keep the bit square to the work.
