Choosing a magnetic nut setter

Magnetic nut setters are hex sockets that chuck into a drill/driver for running hex-head screws and small nuts. The magnet holds the fastener in the socket, so you can start it one-handed on a roof, on a ladder or overhead. This standard range is 20 ITM setters in sizes from 1/4" to 1/2" and lengths from 1-3/4" to 6".

Choosing and using

Match the setter to the hex head so it seats fully. A loose socket rounds the fastener and wears out fast. Short setters, 1-3/4" to 2-9/16", give better control and fit tight spots. The 4" and 6" lengths reach fasteners set below a surface or behind framing.

Run the drill at low to medium speed with the clutch set, and keep the tool in line with the fastener. Stop when the head seats. Forcing it strips threads and thin sheet metal.

Common questions

How do I pick the right size?

Match the setter to the hex size of the screw or nut head, so a 5/16" head takes a 5/16" setter. Then choose the length by access: short for control, 4" or 6" for recessed fasteners.

Will the magnet hold every fastener?

The magnet holds steel fasteners in the socket so you can start them without a hand on them. It will not hold non-magnetic fasteners such as brass or most stainless.

Can I use these in an impact driver?

They are listed for drill/drivers. For an impact driver, use sockets made for impact use, since standard sockets can wear out or crack under impact.
