High-Speed Drill Bits Stubby / Mechanics Length
Short, stiff 135° high-speed steel twist drills in black oxide and black-and-gold finishes, from Tru-Cut and Triumph with a few Titan. Fraction, number and letter sizes for tight spots, sheet metal and drill press work.
Choosing a stubby drill bit
Stubby drills, also called mechanics length, are short twist drills in high-speed steel. Less length means less flex, so the bit starts where you point it and holds a straighter line. That makes them the pick for tight spaces, sheet metal and any job where a longer drill would bend or wander.
The range is mostly Tru-Cut and Triumph, with a few Titan, all with a 135° point. Finishes are black oxide or black and gold. Sizes run by fraction, number and letter up to 1/2", and a few have a 1/4" shank.
Drilling tips
Use cutting oil on steel and lower the speed as the diameter goes up. Keep steady pressure so the chips come off in curls, not dust. Mark hard surfaces with a center punch first. If the hole is deeper than the flutes can clear, move up to a jobber length bit.

Common questions
What is the difference between stubby and jobber drills?
Length. A stubby drill is shorter, so it flexes less and starts more accurately. A jobber drill is longer and reaches deeper. Pick stubby when the hole is shallow or the space is tight.
What point angle do these have?
135°, as the product titles show. A 135° point is commonly used on steel and tougher materials and helps the bit start without skating.
Do I need a pilot hole for the larger sizes?
For sizes near 1/2" a smaller pilot drill first makes the big bit cut easier and keeps the hole on centre. On thin sheet metal you can often go straight in with cutting oil and steady pressure.
