Choosing a diamond core bit

Diamond core bits grind through tile and stone instead of cutting it, which is why they handle dense porcelain and large holes that wear out a carbide bit. This range is 28 ITM products: Blu Diamond Tile Core Drills, diamond segment bits and the adapters that mount them. Sizes run from 3/16" to 2-1/2".

Shanks come in three types: 1/4" hex impact, 3/8" hex and 5/8"-11 thread. Adapters are listed too, including SDS-Plus to 5/8"-11, SDS-Plus to 1-1/4"-7 and 5/8"-11 to 3/8" hex.

Drilling tips

Use rotation only. If you run the bit in a rotary hammer, switch it to drill-only mode. Keep water on the cut, because diamond runs cool wet and dies fast dry. Start slowly to seat the bit, then use light pressure and let the diamond work. Lift the bit now and then to clear slurry.

Common questions

Can I use a diamond core bit in a hammer drill?

No. Use rotation only. Hammer action can crack tile and damage the diamond. A rotary hammer is fine if you switch it to drill-only mode.

Do I need water?

Yes. Diamond runs cool wet and overheats quickly dry, which shortens bit life. Keep water on the cut and lift the bit now and then to clear slurry.

Which shank do I need?

It depends on your drill. The range has 1/4" hex impact, 3/8" hex and 5/8"-11 thread shanks. Adapters, including SDS-Plus and 5/8"-11 to 3/8" hex, let you match a bit to the tool you have.
