Foundation Repair: Rebar Cutting
Rebar cutters and SDS-Plus and SDS-Max rebar punchers for the anchor or wall hole that hits steel, so you can finish the hole instead of moving the bracket.
When the hole hits rebar
Footings and basement walls are full of steel, and a carbide masonry bit that hits rebar stops cold. Switch to a rebar cutter or rebar puncher of the same diameter, cut through the bar, then go back to the masonry bit to finish the hole.
Rebar cutters come in SDS-Plus and straight shank. The RT SDS-Plus punchers run 3/8" to 1-1/4" at 12" and 18" long, and the RMX SDS-Max punchers 5/8" to 1-3/4" at 12" and 21".
Run a rebar cutter in rotation only, hammer off, and use it on the steel only, never to drill concrete. Expect a short life when it meets heavy bar dead center. A rebar puncher runs in rotary hammer mode, cuts about twice as fast and is best on #5 (5/8") rebar and under, which makes it the better pick when a crew hits steel all day.
