Choosing a ship auger

Ship augers are the bit for long, clean holes through wood. The screw tip pulls the bit forward and the open flutes carry chips out. The ITM range splits into two series on the same 7/16" shank, so the choice comes down to length and diameter.

The Standard series runs 3/8" to 1-1/2" in 8" and 18" lengths, and is tagged for electricians. The Power Pole series is the long one, 1/2" to 1-1/16" in 18", 24", 36" and 48" lengths.

Drilling tips

Use a low-speed, high-torque drill, hold it firmly, and let the tip feed the bit. Back out regularly in deep holes to clear chips. Check for nails and screws first, because steel ruins the cutting edges. Ease off at the exit to prevent splintering.

Common questions

What is the difference between Standard and Power Pole?

Length and diameter range. Standard is 8" and 18" long in 3/8" to 1-1/2" diameters. Power Pole is 18" to 48" long in 1/2" to 1-1/16" diameters. Both use a 7/16" shank.

What do ship augers drill?

Wood. They are made for boring through framing and timber, not metal. Check for nails and screws before drilling, because steel damages the cutting edges.

What shank do they have?

All ITM ship augers here have a 7/16" shank. Make sure your chuck or adapter accepts that size.
