A 5/8" SDS-Plus hammer bit with a stop lip that bottoms out at 1-3/16", the exact hole depth a 1/2" Short drop-in anchor needs. Drill until the lip touches the concrete and the hole is right: the anchor sits flush, the setting tool expands it properly, and the threaded rod pulls against the full cone.

Overhead work is where that matters most. Hangers for pipe, duct, sprinkler line, strut and cable tray all land in a concrete deck, and a hole drilled too deep buries the anchor below the surface, while a shallow one stops the anchor short. The stop also keeps you from driving deeper than you need to, which is one less chance of hitting rebar. Carbide tipped, ANSI specification, sold individually.
