Data Centers: Pipe Fab & Weld Prep
Shop spools and field welds on carbon steel pipe and supports: Walter PIPEFITTER and HP XX grinding wheels, ALLSTEEL TURBO flap discs, stationary saw wheels, COMBO ZIP wheels, wire cup brushes and carbide burrs.
Weld prep, by the box
Most data center mechanical work is prefabricated, so the cutting, beveling, grinding and brushing happens in a spool shop with a crib and a weekly burn rate. This step is that shop's list, sold by the box.
- Walter PIPEFITTER wheels 4-1/2" to 9" in 3/32" to 5/32" for notching, beveling and root grinding on pipe.
- HP XX grinding wheels 4-1/2" to 9" in 1/8" and 1/4", Type 27 and hubbed Type 27S, for heavy stock removal.
- ALLSTEEL TURBO flap discs 4-1/2" to 6" in 40, 60 and 80 grit for weld blending.
- Stationary saw wheels 12" to 20": RIPCUT, RIPCUT II and RAILCUT II for cut-to-length on the chop saw or stationary saw.
- COMBO ZIP cut-and-deburr wheels 4-1/2" to 6".
- Wire cup brushes 3" to 7", crimped and knot-twisted, 5/8"-11 and M14, plus 1/4" shank mounted brushes for the die grinder.
- Carbide burrs: double cut, long shank, miniature, aluminum cut, hard alloy and sets.
Keep stainless-safe wheels and brushes for stainless only; a brush that has touched carbon steel will rust-stain the next stainless weld. Hold a flap disc at a shallow angle and keep it moving so the grain cuts instead of glazing.

Common questions
Can we set up a standing order for the shop?
Yes. Trade accounts set recurring orders in My Toolbox for the wheels, discs and brushes the shop burns every week, and change the quantities or dates any time. Invoices roll up to one statement.
What grit flap disc for blending a fillet weld?
Start with 40 grit to knock the weld down and finish with 60 or 80. Zirconia ALLSTEEL TURBO discs hold up on carbon steel and stainless.
Which burr for weld cleanup inside a pipe?
A double-cut cylindrical or ball-nose burr on a 1/4" shank for carbon steel and stainless; the 6" long-shank burrs reach further in. Use an aluminum-cut burr on aluminum or copper so it does not load up.
