Choosing a bellhanger bit

Bellhangers are long, small-diameter drill bits for boring through framing (studs, top plates, joists and blocking) so cable and conduit can run where you need them. This collection has 101 items from ITM and Tru-Cut. Most are stiff-shank bellhangers (81), from 3/16" to 7/8" in diameter and 12" to 48" long. The rest are flexible-shank bits (20) that bend, so you can drill through a wall or ceiling from an opening you can reach.

Drilling tips

Let the bit cut. Steady, light pressure at moderate speed beats forcing it, which overheats long bits and bends them. Pull out every few inches to clear chips, and keep the drill square so the bit does not wander. Check the shank size in the title, such as "w/3/8" shank", against your chuck before you order.

Not sure which style you need? Drill straight through with a stiff bellhanger, or use the electrician's flex bits for finished walls.

Common questions

Stiff-shank bellhanger or flex bit?

Use a stiff bellhanger when you can drill straight through. Use a flex bit when the wall, ceiling or floor is closed in and you have to drill from an opening at an angle.

Why does the title list a shank size?

Many bits are larger than the chuck can take, so they have a reduced shank. A 1/2" x 24" bellhanger with a 3/8" shank fits a 3/8" chuck. Shanks in this collection run from 3/16" to 1/2".

Who makes these?

ITM supplies 57 of the 101 items and Tru-Cut supplies 44. Both brands have stiff-shank and flexible bits. The product title and page give each bit's material and shank.
