Choosing a V-Groove tile bit

V-Groove tile drill bits are the bit shower door and glass installers reorder by the box. The tip is a carbide insert ground to a V, so it seats itself on glazed porcelain or ceramic and starts the hole exactly where you put it — no punch, no tape, no wandering.

Drilling tips

On tile, run at medium speed with light, steady pressure and let the carbide do the work; forcing it chips the glaze. A drop of water keeps the tip cool on porcelain and stretches bit life. Back off as the bit breaks through so the far side stays clean.

ITM V-Groove tile bits are rotation only. Relton Groo-V® masonry drills are rated for hammer drills in brick, block and concrete — switch the hammer off when you move to tile.

For very hard rectified porcelain or granite, or any hole over 1/2", step up to a diamond core bit, which grinds rather than cuts and runs cool with water.

Common questions

Do V-Groove bits drill porcelain?

Yes. The V-ground carbide tip is designed for glazed porcelain and ceramic, and also drills granite and marble. On tile, use rotation only at medium speed with light pressure; for very hard rectified porcelain or holes over 1/2", a diamond core bit is the better tool.

Hammer drill or rotation only?

It depends on the bit and the material. ITM V-Groove tile bits are rotation only — hammer action cracks tile and chips the tip. Relton Groo-V® masonry drills are rated for hammer drills in brick, block and concrete; when you move to tile, switch the hammer off.

Can I buy a single bit instead of a box of 25?

The 3/16" and 1/4" ITM V-Groove sizes come in boxes of 25 — they are consumables for installers. Larger ITM sizes and all Relton Groo-V® masonry drills are sold singly, and most are also available in 25-packs.
