Automotive: Rivet & Fastener Holes
Jobber drills in the sizes body shops use for rivets and fasteners, from #40 to 5/16", plus countersinks and deburring tools for clean, burr-free holes in sheet metal.
Holes for rivets and fasteners
Once the new panel is fitted, rivets, blind fasteners and self-tapping screws need holes of the right size without burrs around them. This step holds the drills for those sizes and the tools that clean the hole up.
- Jobber drills in rivet sizes: #40, #30, #21, #11, 1/8", 9/64", 5/32", 3/16", 13/64", 1/4" and 5/16", across black oxide, TiN, cobalt, carbide-tipped and 1/4" hex impact lines.
- Weldon countersinks and deburring tools: 82° countersinks and 60° and 90° deburring tools for chamfering and deburring drilled holes.
Sizing the hole
Use the drill size the rivet or fastener maker lists. For blind rivets it is usually a size or so over the body. Keep the drill square, put a drop of cutting oil on the bit when drilling steel, and deburr both sides so the rivet or fastener seats flat. Check the repair procedure for where fastener holes may be placed.

Common questions
What drill size for a 1/8" blind rivet?
A 1/8" blind rivet is commonly drilled with a #30 bit, and a 5/32" rivet with a #21. A 3/16" rivet usually takes 13/64". Confirm against the rivet maker's chart for the exact body and material.
Why deburr a rivet hole?
A burr keeps the rivet or fastener from seating flat and can lift paint at the edge. A deburring tool or countersink takes it off in a turn or two on both sides of the sheet.
Are the bits sold singly or by the pack?
Both. Many sizes come as a 12-pack tube or a larger box, and each product page shows the quantity and minimum order.
