Walter resin fibre, quick-change and hook & loop sanding discs for blending welds, removing mill scale and finishing steel, stainless and aluminum, plus the backing pads they mount on. Angle grinder sizes 4-1/2" to 7"; die grinder sizes 1-1/2" to 3".
Choosing a sanding disc
Every disc here is Walter, built for metal fabricators: resin fibre discs for angle grinders, small quick-change discs for die grinders, and hook & loop discs for finishing. Grits run from 24 for heavy stock removal to 180 for a fine finish.
Picking the grain
- COOLCUT (aluminum oxide): general grinding on mild steel at a low cost per disc.
- TOPCUT (zirconia alumina): faster, longer-lasting cut on steel and stainless.
- COOLCUT XX and XTRACUT (ceramic): the hardest-working grain for stainless, aluminum and hard metals. COOLCUT XX 4-1/2" and 5" come in bulk boxes of 50.
Fibre discs need a backing pad on the grinder. Hold the disc at a shallow angle, keep it moving and let the grain cut; leaning on it glazes the disc and heats the work. Keep stainless discs for stainless only so carbon steel doesn't rust-stain the finish.

Common questions
Which grit should I start with?
24 or 36 grit for heavy weld removal and mill scale, 60 or 80 for blending, and 100 to 180 for finishing. Step down one or two grits at a time so each pass removes the scratches from the last.
Ceramic, zirconia or aluminum oxide?
Aluminum oxide (COOLCUT) is the economical choice for mild steel. Zirconia (TOPCUT) cuts faster and lasts longer on steel and stainless. Ceramic (COOLCUT XX, XTRACUT) is the pick for stainless, aluminum and hard metals and for jobs where you want the most life per disc.
Do fibre discs need a backing pad?
Yes. A resin fibre disc is thin and flexible; it mounts on a backing pad threaded to the grinder spindle. Use a pad sized to the disc so the edge is supported.
