Choosing an extension or adapter

Most of this range is SDS extension bars. ITM makes SDS-Max extensions in 12-1/2", 30", 44" and 82-1/2" lengths, and spline extensions in 12-1/2" and 30". They reach bits into deep or awkward holes without a longer drill. There is also an SDS-Max to SDS-Plus adapter and an X-Tendr Adapter.

Using extensions well

Match the shank first: SDS-Max extensions for SDS-Max hammers, spline extensions for spline-shank tools. Long bars flex, so start the hole with light pressure and keep the drill square to the work. The SDS extensions are made for rotary hammers, so hammer action is fine.

Two hex arbor extensions, 3/8" and 7/16", carry hole saws into deeper spots. Hole saw arbors and kits are in the arbors, adapters and kits collection.

Common questions

Can I use an SDS-Plus bit in an SDS-Max hammer?

Yes, with the SDS-Max to SDS-Plus adapter. It fits the Max chuck and holds the Plus shank.

Do I use hammer mode with extensions?

The SDS-Max and spline extensions are made for rotary hammers, so hammer action is fine. The hex arbor extensions are for hole saws, which should run in rotation only.

How long an extension should I use?

Use the shortest one that reaches. Long bars flex, so begin with light pressure, keep the drill square, and let the hammer do the work.
