Choosing a reamer

A reamer enlarges or cleans up a hole more accurately than a drill bit. This ITM range has 52 items in three families: car and construction reamers (42), pipe reamers and blades (6), and bridge reamers (4).

Choosing and using

Most car reamers have a 1/2" 3-flat shank, which resists slipping in a 1/2" chuck. Hex shank versions are also listed, plus 1/4" hex impact shanks on a few tools. Diameters across the range run from 3/8" to 1-1/4", so match the size to your finished hole.

Drill the hole undersize first, then ream. Run slowly, slower than you would drill, with cutting oil, and turn the reamer only forward. Reversing dulls the edge and can mark the hole.

Common questions

What is the difference between a car reamer and a bridge reamer?

Car reamers enlarge a hole to size. Bridge reamers are tapered, which helps line up and open holes in structural steel. Both are in this range.

What shank do I need?

Most car reamers here have a 1/2" 3-flat shank, which fits a 1/2" chuck. Hex shank versions, including 1/4" hex impact on a few tools, are also listed.

What do pipe reamers do?

They remove the burr left inside a cut pipe or conduit. The range includes pipe reamers and outer chamfer tools with carbide blades, such as a 1/2" to 1-3/8" model.
