Taps & Dies
HSS taps from Triumph for cutting internal threads in metal: fractional, machine screw and pipe sizes. ThunderTap Taper, Plug and Bottoming styles, plus straight flute machine screw taps.
Choosing the right thread tap
A tap cuts the internal thread you run a bolt, machine screw or pipe fitting into. This range is all Triumph HSS and splits three ways: 63 fractional taps, 27 machine screw taps and 8 pipe taps. Most are ThunderTap Taper, Plug and Bottoming styles. The machine screw taps are straight flute.
Sizes are listed the way the thread is called out, such as 3/8-16 NC or 5/16-24 NF. NC is coarse thread and NF is fine thread, so match the tap to the screw or bolt you are threading. Start with the fractional taps for bolt sizes.
Tapping tips
Drill the tap drill size first, using a chart. Use cutting fluid, keep the tap square to the hole, and turn it back a quarter turn every half turn or so to break the chip. If it binds, back it out and clear it instead of forcing it.

Common questions
What is the difference between taper, plug and bottoming taps?
A taper tap has the longest lead and starts easiest. A plug tap is the general-purpose choice. A bottoming tap has almost no lead and cuts threads close to the bottom of a blind hole, usually after starting with a plug tap.
What do NC and NF mean?
NC is national coarse and NF is national fine. They are different thread pitches for the same diameter, such as 10-24 NC and 10-32 NF. The tap must match the screw or bolt you are threading.
How do I avoid breaking a tap?
Use the correct tap drill size, keep the tap square, and lubricate. Reverse a quarter turn every half turn or so to snap the chip. Never force a tap that binds. Back it out and clear the flutes.
