Choosing a tile milling cutter

A diamond milling cutter is an end mill for tile. Instead of drilling a round hole, it grinds sideways as well as forward, so you can enlarge a hole, cut a notch or shape an opening around a fixture. This range is eight ITM Diamond Milling Cutters, all on a 5/8"-11 thread and all listed for shower door installers.

Sizes are 1/4", 5/16", 3/8", 5/8", 3/4", 1", 2" and 3". The small cutters make narrow slots and small notches. The 2" and 3" cutters handle big openings. The 5/8"-11 thread threads onto a tool with a matching spindle, or onto a threaded adapter.

Using a milling cutter

Keep water on the cutter. Diamond lasts longer cool, and water carries the slurry away. Start the cut gently, then use light pressure and move steadily. Let the diamond do the grinding.

Common questions

What is a diamond milling cutter used for?

It grinds tile sideways as well as forward, so you can enlarge a hole, cut a notch or shape an opening. A core bit or drill bit only cuts a plain round hole.

How do these mount?

All eight have a 5/8"-11 thread. They thread onto a tool with a matching spindle, or onto a threaded adapter that converts to your drill or grinder.

Do I need water?

Yes. Diamond lasts longer when it stays cool, and water carries away the slurry. Start gently and keep light, steady pressure instead of forcing the cutter.
