Choosing a car reamer

Car and construction reamers are the tapered cutters ironworkers and fabricators use to line up bolt holes and open them to size in steel. This collection is all ITM, 42 reamers in sizes from 3/8" to 1-1/4".

Most of the range, 34 reamers, has a 3-flat shank, and 29 of those are 1/2" 3-flat. There are also hex reamers in 11/16", 13/16", 15/16" and 1-1/16", Fast Spiral reamers, and a 5-step reamer running 5/16" to 9/16" for when one tool has to cover several hole sizes.

Using a reamer

Run slowly with cutting oil and steady pressure. A reamer takes a big cut for its size, so use a drill with torque to spare and hold it square. Pick the shank your drill or chuck accepts before you pick the size.

Common questions

What does a car reamer do?

It enlarges a hole and pulls misaligned holes into line, mainly in steel. Ironworkers and construction crews use it when bolted members do not quite match.

What shank styles are available?

Most of the range is 3-flat, including a large group with a 1/2" 3-flat shank. There are also hex reamers and a few 3/8" and 7/16" 3-flat sizes. The product page lists the shank for each reamer.

What speed should I run a reamer at?

Slow, with cutting oil. Reamers grab if run fast or started crooked. Hold the drill square and keep steady pressure until the cut is finished.
