Choosing a glass drill bit

Glass bits are not ordinary twist bits, and they need a lighter touch than a metal or masonry bit. This range is Tru-Cut and ITM, in three styles: Quad Spear, RAZOR and Spear Point. Sizes run from 1/8" to 1", and some sizes have a reduced shank to fit a standard chuck.

The RAZOR bits are listed in 3" and 4" lengths, and some come in 25-packs. There is also a 4-piece Quad glass and tile set in 3/16", 1/4", 5/16" and 3/8".

Drilling tips

Rotation only, never hammer. Run at low to medium speed with light, even pressure, and keep the tip wet with water so it does not overheat. Clamp the glass, rest it on a flat backing, and ease off as the bit breaks through. Tempered glass cannot be drilled, so holes must go in before it is tempered.

Common questions

Can I drill tempered glass?

No. Tempered glass shatters if you drill it. Holes have to be drilled in annealed glass before tempering. Use these bits on annealed glass, mirror and other untempered glass.

Do I use water and a hammer drill?

Use water on the tip and never use hammer action. Hammer cracks glass. Drill in rotation with light pressure and a low to medium speed.

Is there a set, or a box of bits for installers?

There is a 4-piece Quad glass and tile set in 3/16", 1/4", 5/16" and 3/8". The RAZOR 3/16" x 3" and 1/4" x 4" bits are also listed in 25-packs.
