Choosing a ship auger bit

Ship augers are long, self-feeding wood bits for boring through framing, beams and timber. The range is all ITM, in two styles: Standard and Power Pole. Diameters run from 3/8" to 1-1/2", and lengths from 8" to 48", with 18" the most common. Every bit has a 7/16" shank.

Drilling tips

Check that the shank fits your chuck or right-angle drill before you order. Run at moderate speed with steady, light pressure and let the screw tip pull the bit in. Back the bit out regularly to clear chips so it does not bind. Choose a length that clears the full depth of the piece.

Starting square matters in deep holes. Hold the drill level and support it as it breaks through to avoid splintering the back side. Twenty-eight of the bits are tagged for electricians.
