Choosing an HSS bellhanger

These are stiff-shank bellhangers for drilling straight through studs, plates and joists. There are 40 items, 32 from ITM and 8 from Tru-Cut. Most are high speed steel, and a few are carbon steel. Sizes run from 3/16" x 12" up to 3/8" x 48", 1/2" x 42" and 5/8" x 18", with shanks of 3/16", 1/4", 5/16", 3/8" or 1/2".

Drilling tips

Run at moderate speed with steady, light pressure. A long bit that is forced will heat up and bend. Keep the drill square to the work, and pull the bit out every few inches to clear chips. Check the shank in the title (for example "w/3/8" shank") against your chuck size before ordering.

Eight of the 40 are carbide-tipped for masonry. Use them as the product page directs, and keep the plain HSS bits for framing. If you want a bit that resists abrasive material for longer, see the carbide-tipped bellhangers.
