Choosing a socket extension
An extension moves the socket away from the ratchet or drill so you can reach a fastener that sits in a recess or behind an obstruction. ITM makes these in three drive sizes, 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2", with lengths from 1" up to 8". The drive size has to match your socket and your ratchet or adapter.
Choosing and using
Pick the shortest extension that reaches. A longer one flexes and lets the socket wobble off the fastener. Keep the extension in line with the fastener, and seat the socket fully before you apply torque. The magnetic hex sockets come in the same three drive sizes.

How long should the extension be?

Yes, if the drive size matches. ITM sockets in this range are 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" drive, the same as the extensions.
