High-Speed Drill Bits Jobber Length
Jobber length HSS drill bits, the standard length for general drilling in steel and other metals. Triumph, Tru-Cut and ITM, in Black & Gold, black oxide, TiN and uncoated, sold singly and in bulk packs.
Choosing a jobber length bit
Jobber length is the standard drill bit length and the one most shops stock first. This range is mostly Triumph, with Tru-Cut and ITM, in fractional, number and letter sizes. Point angles are 118° and 135°, and finishes run from bright and black oxide to Black & Gold and TiN.
The range also includes cobalt bits, carbide-tipped jobber drills, bits with 3-flat shanks that grip in the chuck, and a few impact-rated bits. Many sizes come in bulk packs of 144 or 288, and a handful are tagged for shower door and plumbing work.
Drilling tips
Use cutting oil on steel, slow down as the diameter goes up, and start anything large with a pilot hole. Center punch the spot to keep the tip from walking. For deeper holes see the aircraft extension bits.

Common questions
What does jobber length mean?
It is the standard, general-purpose drill length. Shorter than an aircraft extension bit and longer than a stubby, it suits most everyday drilling.
Do jobber bits come in bulk packs?
Yes. Many sizes are sold in packs of 144 or 288, as well as single bits. The pack size is in the product title.
Which bit for stainless steel?
Cobalt bits are the usual choice for stainless and tougher alloys. Run them slower than you would in mild steel, keep firm pressure and use cutting oil.
