Choosing a drill tap

A combination drill tap drills the hole and cuts the thread in a single pass, so there is no separate tap drill to match and no swapping tools. They suit electricians and fabricators who need threaded holes for boxes, brackets and plates. The ITM range covers machine-screw sizes 6-32, 8-32, 10-24, 10-32 and 12-24, plus 1/4"-20, 5/16"-18, 3/8"-16 and 1/2"-13. There is also an 8 Pc. 3 in 1 HD drill tap kit.

Using a drill tap

Centre-punch the spot and run the drill at low speed. Use cutting oil, and keep the drill square to the work. Go through in one steady pass without stalling mid-hole, then back the tap out and clear the chips. Bigger sizes need slower speeds and more oil, and a corded drill with some torque helps on the 3/8" and 1/2" sizes.

Common questions

Do I need a separate drill bit with these?

No. A combination drill tap drills the hole and then cuts the thread, so you use one tool per size. Match the tool to the thread you want, for example 10-24 or 1/4"-20.

What speed should I run a drill tap at?

Slow. Use cutting oil and steady pressure. Run it through the hole without stopping, then back it out to clear chips. Larger sizes need lower speeds.

Which thread sizes are in the range?

6-32, 8-32, 10-24, 10-32, 12-24, 1/4"-20, 5/16"-18, 3/8"-16 and 1/2"-13, plus an 8-piece 3-in-1 HD kit.
