Choosing a Torx driver bit

Torx, or star, screws are used where a driver needs to grip hard without slipping: construction and deck screws, hardware, and fixtures. The range is 30 ITM bits, with T40, T30, T20, T15, T27, T25 and T10 the best covered. The smallest sizes, T6 to T9, are 1" insert bits. Lengths run from 1" up to 6" power bits. Fourteen bits are on a 1/4" hex impact shank, eleven on a plain 1/4" hex shank and five on a 5/16" hex shank.

Driving tips

A Torx bit has to seat fully in the star socket. If it wobbles, it is the wrong T size, so try it before you commit to the screw. Keep the driver in line and press in firmly, since a bit that is half-seated wears the socket and its own tip. Clear debris out of the socket first, and replace a worn tip before it strips the head. The screws take high torque well, but set a clutch for small sizes.

Common questions

How do I know which T size I need?

The size is stamped on many screws or listed on the box. If not, test-fit: the right bit seats fully with almost no wobble. A bit that rocks is too small, and one that will not go in is too large.

Can I use Torx bits in an impact driver?

Fourteen of the 30 are on a 1/4" hex impact shank, so pick those for an impact driver. The others are plain 1/4" hex or 5/16" hex shanks, better for a drill/driver.

What are the 5/16" shank bits for?

Five bits are on a 5/16" hex shank, such as the T40 x 1-1/4" bit. They suit a driver or holder that takes the larger shank. Check your tool before ordering.
