Collision repair tools, step by step

A collision repair runs in a set order: cut the damaged panel out, drill and fasten the new one, grind the welds flush, strip back to bare metal, weld and protect, chase the threads and drill the holes for sensors and trim, then clean up the booth. This page groups the cutting tools a body shop wears out by that order. For how shops set up an account with us, see our automotive page.

By job step

  • Panel & Spot-Weld Removal: stubby drills from 3/16" to 1/2" for drilling out spot welds, and 3" and 4" cut-off wheels for die grinders.
  • Rivet & Fastener Holes: jobber drills in rivet sizes from #40 to 5/16", plus countersinks and deburring tools.
  • Seam & Weld Grinding: carbide burrs, flap discs, resin fibre and quick-change discs, backing pads and grinding wheels.
  • Paint & Rust Stripping: wire cup and mounted brushes and hook and loop discs.
  • Welding & Corrosion Protection: SPATTER BLOCK anti-spatter protection for the weld area.
  • Thread Repair & Broken Bolts: taps, metric drills and left-hand drills for broken fasteners.
  • Trim, Sensor & Harness Holes: bi-metal hole saws, car reamers and step drills.
  • Paint Booth & Shop Cleanup: degreasers and cleaners, and Allegro supplied-air respirators.

Hard steel and heat

Boron and other ultra-high-strength steels dull ordinary bits quickly, and the vehicle maker's repair procedure says where welds may be drilled or cut and where they may not. Follow it. Keep the drill square, use steady pressure and cutting oil, and wear eye protection. Cutting and grinding wheels need their guard and a tool that does not exceed the wheel's rated speed.

Common questions

Which drill bits work for drilling out spot welds?

Stubby (mechanics-length) drills from 3/16" to 1/2" are the usual choice, since the short length keeps the bit stiff and on the weld in a tight flange. Boron and ultra-high-strength steel dull ordinary bits fast, so check the vehicle maker's repair procedure first.

We run several shops and a couple of sister companies. Can that be one account?

Yes. In My Toolbox, under Company, you can add branches and locations, set up a head office, or ask to be linked under a parent company that already buys from us. Each branch keeps its own address book, team and account, and anyone at the head office can act for a branch to order, track and pay. The accounting records follow automatically, so nothing gets retyped on our side.

Do you sell to public fleets and municipal garages?

Yes. Government, school and public-fleet buyers can pay with a purchase card or send a purchase order on Net 30, and can set up a tax-exempt account. The details and the account form are on our Government & Education Buyers page at eldoradotools.com/pages/government.

Can I order the same drills and discs again without searching?

Yes. Trade accounts can reorder past items in a click from My Toolbox, and your team members can order on the same account. Orders placed by 4 PM Eastern ship the same business day.
