Taps & Dies Pipe Taps
Triumph HSS Taper Pipe ThunderTaps for cutting tapered pipe threads, in eight sizes from 1/8 to 1-1/2. For plumbers, fabricators and anyone threading fittings into plate or castings.
Choosing a pipe tap
A pipe tap cuts a tapered internal thread, so a pipe fitting wedges tight and seals as it goes in. This range is eight Triumph HSS Taper Pipe ThunderTaps, from 1/8 to 1-1/2, including a 3/4-14 NPT. They are used to thread ports in fittings, plate, manifolds and castings.
Pick the tap by pipe size, not by the drill you have on hand. The tap drill is listed on a pipe tap drill chart and is a different size from the nominal pipe size, so check before you drill.
Tapping tips
Pipe taps cut a lot of metal, so they need slow speed and plenty of cutting oil. Turn a half turn in and a quarter turn back to clear chips. Stop when the fitting threads in to the depth it needs. Cutting deeper than that leaves a loose, leaky thread. Use sealant or tape on the male thread when you assemble it.

Common questions
What makes a pipe tap different from a regular tap?
A pipe tap is tapered, so the thread gets tighter as the fitting goes in and seals against the fitting. A regular tap cuts a straight thread that clamps a screw or bolt but does not seal.
What size drill do I use before a pipe tap?
Use a pipe tap drill chart. The drill is smaller than the nominal pipe size, so check the chart for the exact size.
Do I still need thread sealant?
Yes. Tapered pipe threads seal best with pipe thread sealant or PTFE tape on the male thread. The taper gets the fit tight, and the sealant fills the small gaps.
