Taps & Dies Machine Screw Taps
Triumph HSS straight flute taps for numbered machine screw threads, 4-40 through 12-28. 27 taps in tap, plug and bottoming styles, coarse (NC) and fine (NF).
Choosing a machine screw tap
Machine screw taps cut the small threads used for electrical enclosures, brackets, panels and equipment. This range is 27 Triumph HSS straight flute taps, listed by screw size and pitch: 4-40 NC, 6-32 NC, 8-32 NC, 10-24 NC, 10-32 NF, 12-24 NC and more.
Each size comes as a standard tap, a plug tap or a bottoming tap. Use plug for through holes and bottoming when a blind hole needs threads close to the bottom. The first number is the screw size and the second is threads per inch, so 10-24 and 10-32 are the same screw with different pitches.
Tapping tips
Small taps snap easily, so go slowly. Drill the tap drill size from a chart, use cutting fluid, and keep the tap square. Turn it in, back off a quarter turn to break the chip, and never force it. Clear chips out of blind holes before you finish.

Common questions
What do the numbers in 10-24 mean?
The first number is the screw size and the second is threads per inch. So 10-24 is a #10 screw with 24 threads per inch. 10-32 is the same screw with a finer pitch.
Plug tap or bottoming tap?
Plug taps suit through holes and most general tapping. Bottoming taps cut threads close to the bottom of a blind hole. Start with a plug tap if you can, then finish with bottoming.
How do I keep from snapping a small tap?
Drill the right tap drill size, keep the tap square, use cutting fluid, and turn slowly. Back off a quarter turn every half turn to break the chip. If it binds, stop and back it out.
