Frameless Shower Door Installation on Tile, Step by Step
A step-by-step frameless shower door installation on tile: blocking, the right bit for hinge holes, countersinking so tile doesn't crack, glass weights, sealing, and troubleshooting.
Quick answer: Frameless shower door installation comes down to three things: screw the hinges into wood blocking or studs, never plain anchors; drill the tile with a diamond or carbide tile bit in rotation only; and countersink every hole so the screws don't crack the tile when you tighten them. A 3/8 in. glass door weighs about 5 lb per square foot, so a 28 x 72 in. door is roughly 70 lb. Hang it with two people, then seal the fixed panels with silicone and let it cure 24 hours.
What do you need for frameless shower door installation?
For a frameless shower door installation on tile you need the glass and hardware kit, a level, a tape measure, a drill, a tile bit sized to the hinge screws, a bit for the wall behind the tile, a diamond countersink, 100% silicone and a helper. The tile bit and countersink matter most, because a cracked tile at a hinge means pulling the door and replacing the tile.

How do you install a frameless shower door, step by step?
Install a frameless shower door by measuring, finding the blocking, drilling and countersinking the tile, then hanging the glass and sealing it. The drilling steps are where most jobs go wrong, so they get the most detail here.
Measure the opening three times. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom, and check each wall for plumb. Order glass to the smallest width and let the hardware take up the rest. Every hole and notch in the glass is cut before it is tempered, so the measurements have to be right the first time.
Find the blocking. Hinges must screw into wood blocking or studs behind the tile. A swinging glass door is too heavy for anchors in backer board alone. If there is no blocking, stop and talk to your glass supplier before you drill.
Mark the holes. Hold the hinge or clamp in place, level it, and mark each hole through the hardware. Put painter's tape over the marks so the bit doesn't skate on the glaze. Never center-punch tile; it cracks.
Drill the tile, rotation only. Use a diamond bit for porcelain and stone, or a carbide glass and tile bit for glazed ceramic. Hammer mode stays off. Hold a drill guide over the mark for the first 1/8 in.
Countersink every hole. Run a diamond countersink into each hole until the chipped glaze is gone. This is the step that keeps the tile from cracking when you tighten the screws.
Drill the wall behind. Switch bits once you are through the tile: a pilot bit into wood blocking, or a masonry bit into a concrete, block or mortar bed. Only use hammer mode after the bit has cleared the tile.
Seal the holes. Fill each hole with silicone before the anchor or screw goes in, so water can't wick into the wall.
Hang the glass with a helper. Set the panel on setting blocks or shims, attach the hinges, and check level and plumb. Snug the screws by hand. Overtightening cracks tile and glass.
Seal and cure. Run silicone along the fixed panels where they meet the wall and curb. Never caulk the door's swinging edges. Let the silicone cure for 24 hours before the first shower.
"Most cracked tile on a shower door job happens after the hole is drilled. Countersink every hole and snug the hinge screws, don't crank them. Tile and glass don't stretch."

What drill bit do I use for shower door hinge holes?
Use a diamond bit for shower door hinge holes in porcelain, granite and marble, and a carbide glass and tile bit for glazed ceramic. Most hinge and clamp kits call for 3/16 or 1/4 in. holes; check yours. This table gives our pick for each tile at both sizes.

Tru-Cut rates its glass and tile bits for 300 to 600 RPM with steady hand feed, rotation only, with or without water. Diamond bits run at full drill speed with light pressure. For more on bits and technique, see How to Drill Through Tile and Porcelain Without Cracking It.

How much does a frameless shower door weigh?
Tempered glass weighs about 13 lb per square foot for every inch of thickness, so 3/8 in. glass is about 4.9 lb per square foot and 1/2 in. glass about 6.5 lb. That weight is why the hinges need solid blocking and why you hang the door with two people.

Why did the tile crack at the shower door hinge?
Tile cracks at a hinge when the screw head or hinge clamps down on a hole with chipped glaze, the screw is overtightened, or the hole was drilled with hammer mode on. This table covers the common problems.
Problem |
Likely cause |
Fix |
|---|---|---|
Tile cracks when the screw is tightened |
No countersink, or screw overtightened |
Countersink every hole; snug the screws, don't crank them |
Tile cracks while drilling |
Hammer mode on, or pushing too hard |
Rotation only, light pressure, diamond bit on porcelain |
Bit walks off the mark |
Starting on glossy glaze |
Painter's tape plus a drill guide for the first 1/8 in. |
Door sags over time |
Hinge screws in anchors, not blocking |
Remount into wood blocking or studs |
Water stains behind the tile |
Holes not sealed |
Fill each hole with silicone before the screw goes in |
FAQ
Can you drill holes in a tempered glass shower door?
No. Tempered glass shatters if it is drilled or cut. Every hole and notch is made before the glass is tempered, which is why measurements must be exact before you order.
Do frameless shower door hinges need to go into studs?
Yes. Hinges should screw into wood blocking or studs. A frameless door is heavy and swings, and anchors in backer board alone can pull out.
What size hole do I drill for shower door anchors?
Most hinge and clamp kits call for 3/16 or 1/4 in. holes, but follow the size in your kit's instructions and drill the tile with a diamond or carbide tile bit.
How long before I can use the shower after installing the door?
Let 100% silicone cure for 24 hours before the first shower, or longer if the tube says so.
Can I install a frameless shower door myself?
Yes, with a helper, solid blocking and the right tile bits. Many homeowners hire a glazier because the glass is heavy and custom-cut, and a mistake means reordering it.
Should I caulk the inside or outside of a frameless shower?
Caulk the vertical seams where fixed panels meet the wall and the curb. Never caulk the edges of the swinging door, and leave the drip path at the bottom open.
