Quick answer: For most angle grinder work on steel, use a 4-1/2 in. Type 27 grinding wheel. Pick 1/4 in. thick for heavy weld removal and 1/8 in. for lighter grinding and tight spots. Use a Type 28 saucer wheel for flat surfaces, a wheel free of iron, sulfur and chlorine on stainless, and a diamond cup wheel on concrete. Match the wheel's size, arbor (7/8 in. hole or 5/8-11 hub) and RPM rating to your grinder. Our everyday pick: Walter HP XX 08H450, $8.42 a wheel.

A grinding wheel is a thick, reinforced abrasive disc made to take metal off with the face of the wheel: weld beads, sharp edges, burrs, rust and mill scale. It is not the same thing as a cut-off wheel. A cut-off wheel is thin and only cuts with its edge. Below is how to choose the right one for your grinder and your job, with the exact wheels we stock.

Which grinding wheel should I use on an angle grinder?

What are the types of grinding wheels?

The types of grinding wheels for angle grinders are numbered by shape. A Type 27 grinding wheel, also called a depressed center grinding wheel, is the one most people mean. Here are the shapes you will meet on an angle grinder:

Type

Shape

Working angle and use

Our wheel

Type 27

Depressed center, flat face, plain 7/8 in. hole

About 15° to 30°; weld removal, edges, corners

08H450, $8.42

Type 27S (hubbed or spin-on)

Type 27 with a 5/8-11 threaded hub built in

Same work; screws onto the spindle with no flange or nut

08H455, $12.31

Type 28

Saucer, dished face

About 0° to 15°; flat surfaces, bevels, less wrist strain

08K706, $23.43

Diamond cup wheel

Steel cup with diamond segments on the rim

Flat on the surface; grinding concrete, block and brick

GCW-50, $83.06

Type 1 / Type 41

Flat, thin

Cutting only, never grinding; see our cut-off wheels

Type 27 working angle per Walter's catalog; Type 28 range per Weiler and Benchmark Abrasives. Always use the guard made for the wheel type.

1/8 in. or 1/4 in. grinding wheel?

Use a 1/4 in. grinding wheel for heavy stock removal and a 1/8 in. wheel for lighter grinding, fillets and tight spots. The thicker wheel lasts longer and takes more side pressure. The thinner wheel is lighter, cuts a narrower path and reaches into roots and corners. For pipe, PIPEFITTER also comes in 3/32 in. (08N453, $6.08) for root passes and 5/32 in. (08N454, $6.51) for cap passes.

Which grinding wheel fits my angle grinder?

A grinding wheel fits your angle grinder when three things match: diameter, arbor and speed. If you just bought a grinder, check these first.

  • Diameter: use the size printed on the grinder and its guard. Never put a bigger wheel on a smaller grinder, because the guard won't cover it and the wheel may not be rated for the speed.
  • Arbor: most 4-1/2 to 9 in. grinders in North America have a 5/8-11 threaded spindle. A 7/8 in. hole wheel goes on over the inner flange and is held by the lock nut. A 5/8-11 hubbed wheel screws straight on. Both fit the same grinder.
  • Speed: the wheel's max RPM must be at least the grinder's no-load RPM.

Grinder speeds from Bosch spec sheets (1375-01, 1703AEVS, 1873-8, 1893-6); the 6 in. row is a typical range, not one model. Wheel speeds are Walter's ratings. Your grinder's own label wins.

Which grinding wheel is safe on stainless steel?

A grinding wheel is safe on stainless steel when it contains no iron, sulfur or chlorine, which leave rust spots on the finished part. Walter makes PIPEFITTER to that standard for grinding welds between passes on pipe, and rates HP XX for steel and stainless steel. Keep separate, marked wheels for stainless. A wheel that has touched carbon steel carries iron onto the next stainless part. Data center crews on liquid-cooling lines should treat this as a rule, not a tip.

What grinding wheel do I use on concrete?

Use a diamond cup wheel, not an abrasive grinding wheel, to grind concrete with an angle grinder. Abrasive wheels wear away fast on concrete. A diamond cup wheel knocks off high spots and form lines, removes laitance, and takes a wall back to sound concrete before carbon-fiber straps, epoxy or a coating go on. Our GCW-50 is a 5 in., 16-segment cup with a 7/8 in. arbor at $83.06, and GCW-50T is the same wheel with a 5/8-11 hub at $85.27. For 7 in. grinders, see GCW-70 at $110.45. To strip paint, mastic or coatings, use a PCD cup wheel such as PCD-50 ($85.18).

Dust: dry grinding concrete releases respirable crystalline silica. Use a dust shroud on a HEPA extractor, or grind wet, plus the respirator your silica plan calls for. The rest of the wall-repair kit is in our foundation repair tools guide.

Grinding wheel or flap disc?

A grinding wheel removes metal faster, and a flap disc grinds and finishes in one pass with a smoother surface. On heavy beads, start with the wheel and blend with a flap disc such as 15Y456 (4-1/2 in., 60 grit, $6.00 a disc). For light cleanup, the flap disc alone is often enough.

Walter calls HP XX its longest-lasting grinding wheel. Earlier stock under the same part numbers is labelled ALLSTEEL XX, and it is the same wheel. See every size and thickness in our grinding wheels collection.

Why does my grinding wheel glaze, wear out fast or vibrate?

Problem

Likely cause

Fix

Wheel glazes and stops cutting on stainless

Heat softens the bond; grains go flat

Ease off the pressure, keep the wheel moving, and use a wheel made for stainless

Wheel wears down fast

Too much pressure, or too steep an angle

Let the wheel's speed do the work; hold a Type 27 at about 15° to 30°

Gouges in flat work

Angle too steep for the surface

Switch to a Type 28 saucer or a flap disc

Vibration

Dirty or bent flange, or wheel not seated

Clean the flanges, then reseat or replace the wheel

Rust spots on stainless later

Wheel used on carbon steel first

Keep a separate wheel for stainless

Cup wheel stops cutting on concrete

Segments glazed over on hard, smooth concrete

Run it briefly on a dressing stone or a cinder block to open the diamonds

Heat ruins wheels the same way it ruins drill bits; our drill speed chart explains why.

FAQ

Can I use a cut-off wheel to grind?

No. A cut-off wheel is about 1/16 in. thick or less and has no side strength. Grind with a 1/8 or 1/4 in. grinding wheel such as 08H452 or 08H450. If you want one wheel that does both, use COMBO ZIP 11T842.

What grinding wheel do I need for welds?

A 1/4 in. Type 27 wheel for heavy beads, such as 08H450 ($8.42), then a flap disc to blend. For pipe welds between passes, use PIPEFITTER 08N452 ($6.18).

How do I change a grinding wheel?

Unplug the grinder or pull the battery. Hold the spindle lock, loosen the outer nut with the spanner, and swap the wheel with the depressed center facing the inner flange. Then tighten the nut. A 5/8-11 hubbed wheel just screws on and off by hand.

Is ALLSTEEL XX the same as HP XX?

Yes. Earlier stock of the same Walter part numbers was labelled ALLSTEEL XX. It is the same wheel.

How do I tell the grit of a grinding wheel?

Read the grade printed on the label. On 08H450 it is ZA-24: zirconia alumina grain, 24 grit. Lower numbers are coarser and remove metal faster.

How many grinding wheels do I have to buy?

Prices are per wheel. Most 7/8 in. Walter wheels have a minimum order of 25, hubbed and saucer wheels a minimum of 10, and diamond cup wheels a minimum of 1.
