Foundation Repair Tools: What Crews Need, Step by Step
Foundation repair demand is up and crews are short-handed. Here is the cutting and drilling tooling for each step of a foundation job, with SKUs and prices.
Quick answer: Foundation repair tools fall into four jobs. To cut a basement slab for interior drain tile, use a 14 in. segmented diamond wheel (KS-14, $99.51, for reinforced concrete). To drill through a wall for wall anchors, use a 31 in. deep SDS-Max X-Cutter (SMTE3678, 7/8 in., $161.64). For pier bracket anchors, use a 4-cutter SDS-Plus bit. For a sump discharge line, use a 2-3/4 in. SDS-Max core bit (880SL1055, $232.14). With crews short-handed, sharp consumables save labor hours.
Why do foundation repair tools matter more in 2026?
Foundation repair tools matter more in 2026 because crews have more work than people. Groundworks, one of the largest foundation repair companies in the U.S., reported that its own field data showed foundation repair demand up more than 20% in the first five months of 2026. It tied the rise to older homes and shifting soil. Groundworks did not publish how it measured this, so treat it as one company's number, not an industry total.
The housing stock backs up the trend. Nearly half of U.S. homes were built before 1980, according to First American Data & Analytics. Older foundations crack, bow and settle as soil swells in wet seasons and shrinks in droughts.
Labor is the catch. NAHB's Q3 2026 remodeler survey names labor as the main headwind for remodelers. Groundworks says it plans to create 5,000 skilled trades jobs over five years to keep up. Until those hires are trained, every crew hour counts. A dull wheel or a re-drilled hole costs the one thing a short-staffed crew cannot buy more of.
Eldorado Tools' President, David Castro, on his observations with foundation repair, “The mistake I see most is running a general-purpose wheel in heavily reinforced concrete. If you’re hitting rebar all day, the heavy-duty KS-14 is the one I’d put on the saw.”
What tools do foundation repair crews use?
Foundation repair crews use diamond wheels, long SDS-Max bits, SDS-Plus anchor bits, core bits and chisels. The table below matches each step of a typical job to the tool and one product we stock for it. Browse the full range in our Foundation & Basement Repair shop.

How do you cut a basement floor for interior drain tile?
To cut a basement floor for interior drain tile, saw two parallel lines along the wall with a 14 in. diamond wheel, then break out the strip with a chisel. The saw does the clean edge. The chisel does the removal.
Pick the wheel by the concrete. The KS-14 ($99.51) is our heavy-duty 14 in. wheel. It has laser-welded 12 mm turbo segments and is made for reinforced concrete and block. For plain slabs, the SG-14 ($76.06) is the general-use 14 in. wheel with 10 mm segments. Both fit walk-behind, cut-off and masonry saws with a 1 in./20 mm arbor, cut wet or dry, and are rated to 5,460 RPM, per ITM.
For corners and tight spots near the wall, a 7 in. wheel on an angle grinder or circular saw reaches where the big saw cannot. The SG-70 ($29.14) is a 7 in. segmented wheel for concrete, block and brick, rated to 8,730 RPM.
Cut wet when you can. Basements trap dust, and concrete dust contains crystalline silica. Water keeps it down.
Once the lines are cut, a flat chisel in an SDS-Max hammer breaks out the strip. The 7024FC (1 in. x 24 in., $34.86) chips and cuts concrete to a line. The wider 7029SC scaling chisel (2 in. x 24 in., $36.20) cleans up the trench floor and edges. Run both in hammer-only mode. See all SDS-Max tools.
What drill bit do you need for foundation wall anchors?
For foundation wall anchors, you need a long SDS-Max 4-cutter bit in the hole size the anchor maker specifies. The bit has to reach all the way through the wall, so drilling depth matters more than overall length.
Our 31 in. ITM X-Cutter SDS-Max bits drill 31 in. deep and are 36 in. long overall. Their 4-cutter carbide heads are built for reinforced concrete.

Always match the hole to the anchor system's install sheet. Wall anchor rods and plates vary by maker. If the bit hits bar inside the wall, see our guide to rebar drill bits for when to switch to a rebar cutter or puncher.
What bits do you need for push pier and helical pier brackets?
Push pier and helical pier brackets bolt to the footing, so you need SDS-Plus 4-cutter bits sized to the bracket's anchor bolts. Footings often hold rebar, and a 4-cutter head drills past glancing hits in hammer mode.
The ITM X-Cutter EVL63264 (1/2 in. x 6-1/4 in., $12.56 per bit, min. 4) and EVL84064 (5/8 in. x 8 in., $23.94 per bit, min. 2) cover the common anchor sizes. The bracket maker's install sheet sets the hole size and depth.
When a hole lands dead on a bar, cut the bar with a rotation-only rebar cutter the same size as the hole, such as the RBS-10 (5/8 in. SDS-Plus, $53.90). Footing bar is structural, so get the engineer's OK first. Our rebar drill bit guide covers the full step-by-step.
What size hole do you need for a sump pump discharge line through a foundation wall?
A 2-3/4 in. hole fits a 2 in. PVC sump discharge line through a foundation wall with room to seal around it. Schedule 40 PVC in 2 in. size has an outside diameter of 2.375 in., per ASTM D1785. Check the size of your own discharge pipe and sealing method first.
The 880SL1055 is a 2-3/4 in. x 12 in. one-piece SDS-Max core bit ($232.14). It cuts concrete, brick, stone and block, comes with a 1/2 in. x 6 in. pilot drill, and cuts about 3 in. deep before you pull the core, per ITM. For thicker walls, the 22 in. 880SL1065 ($267.17) gives more reach.
What tool rakes out mortar joints on a block foundation wall?
A tuck point diamond wheel rakes out mortar joints on a block foundation wall before you repoint. Its thick kerf clears a full joint in one pass.
The UT-40 is a 4 in. tuck point wheel with a 1/4 in. (0.250 in.) kerf, rated to 15,000 RPM. It fits angle grinders with a 7/8 or 5/8 in. arbor and cuts mortar, masonry and concrete wet or dry. Use a grinder with a dust shroud and vacuum indoors.
How much crew time does a worn wheel or bit cost?
A worn wheel or bit costs crew time every time it slows a cut or forces a swap. On a short-staffed crew, that time comes straight out of the next job.
Here is an example, not a study. Say a worn wheel or bit adds 15 minutes to a job, between slower cutting and a mid-job swap. A crew running 8 jobs a week loses 2 hours. Over a 40-week season, that is 80 hours, or two full work weeks for one person. A new SG-14 wheel costs $76.06.
Three habits keep that time on the job:
Stock spares on the truck. Carry a second wheel and a second bit in the sizes you use most.
Standardize sizes across crews. New hires should not have to guess which bit fits which bracket.
Replace on a schedule. Swap anchor bits before they drill undersized holes, not after an anchor fails to hold.
What should a foundation repair crew keep on the truck?
A foundation repair crew should keep at least one spare of every wheel and bit it uses on a typical job. Use this list as a start and adjust for the systems you install.

FAQ
What tools do you need for foundation repair?
Most foundation repair jobs need a diamond wheel for slab cuts, SDS-Max and SDS-Plus 4-cutter bits for anchors, a core bit for pipe holes and an SDS-Max chisel to break out concrete. The exact sizes come from the repair system's install sheets.
What blade cuts a concrete basement floor?
A 14 in. segmented diamond wheel on a walk-behind or cut-off saw cuts a basement floor. Use a heavy-duty wheel such as the KS-14 for reinforced slabs.
How deep do you need to drill for wall anchors?
Deep enough to pass all the way through the foundation wall, so pick a bit by drilling depth, not overall length. Our 31 in. SDS-Max X-Cutters drill 31 in. deep.
Can you drill through rebar when installing pier brackets?
Yes, with the right bit. A 4-cutter bit drills past glancing hits. For a dead-center hit, use a rebar cutter, and get the engineer's OK before cutting footing bar.
Why is foundation repair demand going up?
Groundworks reported a more than 20% rise in its own foundation repair demand in early 2026 and linked it to aging homes and shifting soil. Nearly half of U.S. homes were built before 1980, per First American Data & Analytics.
