Choosing a grinding wheel

These are Walter HP XX grinding wheels, zirconia alumina throughout, made for angle grinders. They are for heavy stock removal: beveling, weld removal and taking down edges. Thicknesses run 1/8" and 1/4", and sizes go from 4-1/2" up to 9".

Styles and sizes

Type 27 wheels have a 7/8" arbor hole. Type 27S wheels are 5/8"-11 threaded, some with a metal hub or spin-on mounting. Type 28 saucer wheels are offered in 7" and 9". The 1/4" wheels remove stock more aggressively, while 1/8" wheels cut a little cooler and lighter.

Use the face of the wheel, not the edge, at a moderate angle. Keep the guard on, stay under the maximum speed marked on the wheel, and replace any wheel that is chipped or cracked. For blending after grinding, step up to a flap disc.

Common questions

What do the 1/8" and 1/4" thicknesses change?

The 1/4" wheels are heavier and suit aggressive stock removal. The 1/8" wheels are thinner and suit lighter grinding and getting into corners.

What is the difference between Type 27, 27S and 28?

Type 27 is a flat wheel, here with a 7/8" arbor. Type 27S wheels are 5/8"-11 threaded. Type 28 is a saucer-shaped wheel, offered in 7" and 9".

Can I use a grinding wheel for cutting?

No. Grinding wheels are made to be used on their face and are not built for slicing. Use a cut-off wheel, such as a COMBO ZIP, for cutting.
