Data Centers: Coring & Penetrations
Core drills for sleeves, chilled-water mains, drains and wall penetrations: diamond cores 1" to 12", one-piece SDS-Max core bits 2" to 6" in 12" and 22" lengths, and carbide modular cores with SDS-Max extensions.
Core bits by hole size
Every conduit bank, chilled-water main, condensate drain and cable penetration starts with a cored hole through a slab or wall. This step covers the three ways to make one.
- Diamond core drills from 1" to 12", 15-3/4" long, for core rigs on the big penetrations.
- One-piece SDS-Max core bits 2" to 6" in 12" and 22" lengths, with a threaded pilot drill, for a rotary hammer when a rig is overkill.
- Carbide modular core drills 1-1/2" to 5" with 8" and 18" SDS-Max tapered extensions, a pilot drill and ejector key.
Size the core to the sleeve, not the pipe, and leave room for firestopping. Keep the rig or hammer square to the surface, let the bit cut at its own pace, and back out to clear slurry or dust. Drilling, coring and cutting concrete releases respirable crystalline silica. Run a shroud on a HEPA-filtered extractor or cut wet where the job allows, and follow your company's exposure control plan.

Common questions
Are the diamond core drills wet or dry?
They are built for core rigs, where wet drilling is the norm. Call us with your rig and the thread size before you order so we match the mount.
What size core do we need for a 4" conduit sleeve?
Core to the sleeve's outside diameter plus clearance, which is usually a 5" or 6" core for a 4" sleeve. Check the sleeve spec and the firestop detail first.
Can an SDS-Max core bit go through a 12" slab?
The 22" one-piece core bits can. The 12" bits suit walls and thinner slabs.
