Automotive: Paint & Rust Stripping
Wire cup brushes and hook and loop discs for taking paint, rust and scale off the panel and back to bare metal.
Stripping to bare metal
Rust repair and weld prep both start by getting back to clean metal. This step holds the brushes and discs for stripping paint, rust and scale off a panel, a rocker or a frame rail.
- Wire cup brushes in 3" to 5", crimped and knot-twisted, in carbon steel and stainless, with M14 x 2.0 or 5/8"-11 arbor threads for angle grinders.
- Mounted cup brushes from 1-1/2" to 3" on a 1/4" shank for die grinders and drills, for corners and seams.
- QUICK-STEP XX hook and loop discs in 4-1/2" to 6", 120 to 180 grit, for feathering paint edges and finishing bare metal.
Strip without cutting in
Wire brushes remove rust and paint but they also scratch and can throw wire, so wear a face shield or safety glasses and keep the speed under the brush's rating. Use stainless brushes on stainless and aluminum so carbon steel does not embed in the surface. Let the brush do the work and keep it moving.

Common questions
Do I need an M14 or a 5/8"-11 brush?
Match the thread on your angle grinder. Most U.S. grinders take 5/8"-11 and many European models use M14 x 2.0. The thread is in each product title.
Carbon steel or stainless wire brush?
Use carbon steel on steel. Use stainless on stainless and aluminum, so carbon steel wire does not embed in the surface and cause rust later.
