Automotive: Welding & Corrosion Protection
Walter SPATTER BLOCK anti-spatter in sprayer bottles and jugs to protect the panels around a weld, and a gel that keeps spatter off nozzles and contact tips.
Keeping spatter off the work
Welding in a car throws spatter onto the clean panels around the joint, and it builds up on the torch nozzle and contact tip. Cleaning it off costs time. This step holds Walter SPATTER BLOCK, the anti-spatter products that keep it from sticking in the first place.
- SPATTER BLOCK anti-spatter emulsion in a 500 mL sprayer bottle and a 3.78 L (1 gal) jug. Walter lists it as green for a better view on the work piece, with temporary corrosion inhibitors, and says it will not harm painted surfaces.
- SPATTER BLOCK HT high-temperature anti-spatter solution in a 500 mL sprayer bottle and a 3.78 L (1 gal) jug, for high-energy spatter. Walter lists it as VOC free, solvent free and silicone free, with an effective range of 100 to 400 A.
- SPATTER BLOCK anti-spatter gel for welding nozzles and contact tips, 200 g canister, which Walter lists as silicone free and free of chlorinated compounds.
Before and after the weld
Apply anti-spatter to the surrounding panels before you weld, then grind the weld clean afterwards. Check the vehicle maker's repair procedure and your paint supplier's system for what may be on a panel before primer, and clean off any film as they direct. Work in a ventilated area, and read each product's label and safety data sheet.

Common questions
What is the difference between SPATTER BLOCK and SPATTER BLOCK HT?
Both keep weld spatter from sticking. Walter makes HT for high-energy spatter and lists an effective amperage range of 100 to 400 A. The standard emulsion is the general-purpose product. Check each product page for its features.
Does anti-spatter spray affect paint adhesion?
Walter lists SPATTER BLOCK HT as not interfering with paint adhesion and says the standard emulsion will not harm painted surfaces. Even so, clean the area as the product label and your paint supplier's instructions direct before any filler, primer or paint goes on.
What is the gel for?
The gel goes on the welding nozzle and contact tip to keep spatter and flux from building up there, which makes them faster to clean and can extend torch life, according to Walter.
