Choosing a Triumph drill bit

Triumph makes high speed steel twist drills and taps, and most of this range is HSS. The bulk is jobber-length drills, with stubby, aircraft extension and Silver & Deming lengths on top. Sizes run across fractional, number, letter and metric, and many are also sold in packs, from 12-packs up to 144 and 288.

Finishes include Black & Gold, Black Oxide, Uncoated, TiN and Bronze Oxide. Some bits are 118° and others 135°, and there are cobalt and carbide-tipped options. For threading, see the taps.

Drilling tips

Use slower speeds as the bit gets bigger, and a drop of cutting oil on steel. Start larger holes with a smaller pilot. Keep steady pressure and clear chips often. A bit that squeals or smokes is running too fast or dull.

Common questions

What is the difference between 118° and 135° bits?

A 118° point is the general-purpose angle. A 135° point is flatter and is commonly chosen for harder materials such as steel. Both are listed in this range, and the angle is in the product title.

Which finish should I pick?

Uncoated is the plain option. Black Oxide is a general-purpose finish for steel. TiN is a harder gold coating that resists wear. Black & Gold and Bronze Oxide are also listed, and the finish is shown on each product page.

Do these come in packs?

Many do. Product titles show packs such as 12, 144 and 288 for ThunderBit® heavy-duty drills, and other sizes are sold singly. Each product page shows the quantity.
