Automotive: Seam & Weld Grinding
Carbide burrs, flap discs, resin fibre and quick-change discs, backing pads and grinding wheels for bringing plug welds and seam welds down flush before filler and primer.
Grinding welds and seams flush
After the welding, plug welds and seams stand proud of the panel and need to come down flush before filler and primer. This step holds the tools for that, from a burr in a die grinder to a fibre disc on an angle grinder.
- Carbide burrs in double-cut, aluminum-cut, hard-alloy, miniature (1/8" shank) and 6" long-shank styles, plus Walter and Drillco burr sets.
- ALLSTEEL TURBO flap discs in 4-1/2" and 5" for blending welds smooth.
- Resin fibre discs in 4-1/2" to 7" (COOLCUT, TOPCUT, XTRACUT) with backing pads, and 1-1/2" to 3" SPINLOCK and TWIST quick-change discs for die grinders and tight spots.
- HP XX grinding wheels in 4-1/2" and 5" for heavy weld removal on thick steel.
Dress the weld, not the panel
Grind the weld down to the surface and stop, since thinning the panel weakens it and builds heat. Start coarse, finish finer so filler or primer gets an even scratch pattern, and keep the disc moving. Use aluminum-cut burrs on aluminum. Wear eye and hearing protection, use the guard, and keep within the disc's rated speed.

Common questions
Burr, flap disc or fibre disc for a plug weld?
A burr in a die grinder takes down a plug weld in a tight spot without touching the panel. A flap disc blends and finishes. A coarse fibre disc on a backing pad removes the most metal fastest. Many shops keep two of the three.
Can I use a steel burr on an aluminum panel?
Use the aluminum-cut burrs for aluminum. Standard double-cut burrs clog on it, and the aluminum-cut style is made to clear the chips.
Which grit should I finish with before filler?
Follow the filler or primer maker's data sheet. A common range for bare metal ahead of filler is 36 to 80 grit.
