Hole saws by conduit size

Every panel, gutter, pull box and enclosure gets drilled for conduit, and every clip and bracket gets a hole in steel. This step holds the hole saws, step drills and twist drills for that work.

  • ITM bi-metal variable pitch hole saws from 9/16" to 6". Conduit sizes: 7/8" for 1/2" conduit, 1-1/8" for 3/4", 1-3/8" for 1", 1-3/4" for 1-1/4", 2" for 1-1/2", 2-1/2" for 2", 3" for 2-1/2", 3-5/8" for 3" and 4-1/2" for 4".
  • Carbide-tipped hole saws 3/4" to 6" for stainless panels and harder sheet.
  • Hole saw kits: Electrician's 8-piece, Master Electrician's 12-piece, Plumber's and Maintenance kits, plus arbors, 12" arbor extensions and an adapter nut.
  • Step drills from 1/8" to 1-3/8" in 1/4" hex and 3/8" shank, for sheet metal and thin panels.
  • 1/4" hex titanium jobber drills 1/16" to 1/2" for impact drivers, and Silver & Deming drills 33/64" to 1-1/2" on a 1/2" shank for larger holes in steel.

Run hole saws slow with the pilot engaged and a little cutting oil on steel; a step drill wants moderate speed and light pressure so each step cuts clean. Deburr the knockout before the bushing goes in.

Common questions

What hole saw size for 3/4" conduit?

1-1/8". The rule of thumb is conduit trade size plus about 3/8": 7/8" for 1/2", 1-1/8" for 3/4", 1-3/8" for 1", 1-3/4" for 1-1/4", 2" for 1-1/2" and 2-1/2" for 2".

Which arbor fits which hole saw?

Hole saws 9/16" to 1-3/16" take the 1/2"-20 thread arbor; 1-1/4" and up take the 5/8"-18 arbor. The kits include the right arbors, and 12" extensions reach into deep boxes.

Step drill or hole saw for a panel?

Step drills are faster and cleaner in sheet metal up to about 1/8" thick and give you several sizes in one bit. Hole saws take over for thicker steel, stainless and anything over 1-3/8".
