Data Centers: Stainless & Liquid Cooling
Contamination-free cutting and finishing for 304 and 316 stainless cooling loops, manifolds and CDU connections: ZIP STAINLESS and other stainless-safe wheels, stainless wire brushes, carbide-tipped hole saws and burrs.
Keep carbon steel off the stainless
Liquid-cooled halls run stainless from the CDU to the manifolds and TCS loops, and stainless is unforgiving about what touches it. A wheel or brush that has been used on carbon steel leaves iron behind, and that iron rusts on the finished pipe. Everything in this step is rated for stainless; keep it in its own box and label it.
- Walter ZIP STAINLESS cut-off wheels 4-1/2" to 9", 3/64" to 5/64" thin, in Type 1 and Type 27, built with less than 0.1% iron, sulfur and chlorine.
- Stainless-safe ALLSTEEL cut-off wheels 4-1/2" to 7", and 2" to 4" ZIP and ALLSTEEL die-grinder wheels for tight work.
- RIPCUT stationary saw wheels 12" to 20" including the 14" wheel made for stainless, and PIPEFITTER and COMBO ZIP wheels for bevel and deburr.
- ALLSTEEL TURBO flap discs for blending, and stainless steel wire cup brushes 3" to 7" plus 1/4" shank mounted brushes.
- Carbide-tipped hole saws 3/4" to 6" for stainless panels, and double-cut and aluminum-cut carbide burrs.
- Metal-cutting circular saw blades for stainless in 7-1/4" and 14".
Cut stainless with light pressure and let the thin wheel do the work; heat discolors the metal and ruins the passive layer. Brush with stainless wire only, and finish the weld zone before the loop is pressure-tested.

Common questions
Why does it matter if a wheel was used on carbon steel first?
Carbon steel particles embed in the wheel or brush and transfer to the stainless, where they rust and can start pitting. Keep a separate, labeled set of stainless-safe wheels and stainless wire brushes for the cooling loop.
What makes a cut-off wheel stainless-safe?
Low iron, sulfur and chlorine in the bond, under 0.1% on Walter's stainless-rated wheels, so the wheel adds no contaminants to the cut. The ZIP STAINLESS line is built specifically for it.
Can we hole-saw a stainless enclosure with bi-metal?
You can, but it is slow and burns teeth. The carbide-tipped hole saws here cut stainless panels cleanly at low speed with cutting oil.
