Quick answer: The best sanding discs for metal on an angle grinder are resin fiber discs on a backing pad. Use zirconia (Walter TOPCUT 15P456, $2.35 a disc) for stainless and everyday weld work, and ceramic (COOLCUT XX 15X456, $3.32) when you grind all day and want fewer disc changes. For corners and weld roots, use 2 in. quick-change discs on a die grinder. Hook and loop discs are for finishing curves, but only on a variable-speed grinder: Walter rates the 4-1/2 in. disc at 7,400 RPM.

Which sanding disc should I use on metal?

The sanding disc to use on metal depends on the tool in your hand first and the metal second. Pick the attachment system, then the grain, then the grit.

Fiber disc vs hook and loop vs quick-change: what's the difference?

The difference is how the disc attaches and what tool spins it. A fiber disc is a stiff, single layer of grain on vulcanized fiber, clamped to a backing pad on an angle grinder. A hook and loop disc presses onto a hook-faced pad. A quick-change disc has a plastic button that twists onto a small holder in a die grinder.

A flap disc is the fourth option and needs no pad. Our flap disc vs grinding wheel guide covers it.

Ceramic vs zirconia sanding discs: which lasts longer?

Ceramic lasts longer than zirconia. Ceramic grain breaks into tiny sharp fragments as it wears, so it keeps cutting after zirconia has gone dull. Zirconia costs less per disc and is the better value on carbon steel and lighter work. Aluminum oxide is cheaper again, but dulls first.

Walter rates COOLCUT XX at about 6 times the stock removal of a standard sanding disc. Ceramic needs a strong grinder and steady pressure: it sharpens itself only when it's pushed. On a small cordless grinder with light pressure, zirconia often does as well.

Which sanding disc fits an angle grinder?

A fiber sanding disc fits an angle grinder when its diameter matches the grinder and you mount it on a backing pad the same size. Our fiber discs have a 7/8 in. center hole. The pad threads onto the grinder's 5/8-11 spindle, and its lock nut clamps the disc. Never run a disc larger than the grinder's guard, or on a pad rated below the grinder's speed. For wheel fit and grinder speeds, see which grinding wheel for angle grinder work.

What backing pad do I need for a fiber disc?

You need a fiber disc backing pad of the same diameter as the disc, with a 5/8-11 thread.

To mount one: thread the pad onto the spindle, lay the disc on the pad, and tighten the pad's lock nut into the disc's center hole.

Can you use hook and loop discs on an angle grinder?

Yes, but only on a variable-speed grinder turned down to the disc's rating. Walter rates its QUICK-STEP XX hook and loop discs at 7,400 RPM (4-1/2 in.) and 6,150 RPM (5 in.). A standard 4-1/2 in. grinder runs about 11,000 RPM, so it's too fast. Heat at that speed softens the hooks and can throw the disc. Hook and loop shines for finishing. Add a soft interface pad (07Q050, 5 in.) and the disc follows a radius or tube instead of flat-spotting it.

What is a Roloc-style quick-change disc?

A Roloc-style disc is a small sanding disc with a threaded button on the back that twists onto a holder in a die grinder. "Roloc" is 3M's name for the system. Walter makes two, TWIST and SPINLOCK, in 1-1/2 to 3 in. They're for weld roots, handrail joints and inside corners that a 4-1/2 in. grinder can't reach. TWIST discs are color coded by grit, which helps when loose discs pile up on the bench.

What grit sanding disc for metal?

Use 24 to 36 grit to take a weld down, 50 to 60 to blend it, and 80 to 120 to finish. If you buy one grit, buy 60. Our flap disc guide has the full grit-by-job table.

Foundation crews: the same 4-1/2 in. fiber disc on a pad cleans pier brackets and steel plates before coating. See our foundation repair tools guide.

FAQ

Can you put a sanding disc on an angle grinder?

Yes. Mount a fiber disc on a backing pad that matches its diameter and is rated for the grinder's speed.

How long does a sanding disc last?

It depends on grain and pressure more than anything. Ceramic outlasts zirconia, and zirconia outlasts aluminum oxide. Change the disc when it stops cutting and starts polishing or heating the work.

What is a PSA sanding disc?

A PSA disc has a peel-and-stick adhesive back. We don't stock PSA discs for metal. Hook and loop does the same job, and the disc can be reused.

Do these discs fit a Dremel?

No. A rotary tool needs its own small discs and mandrel. Our smallest quick-change discs (1-1/2 in.) are made for a die grinder.

Should I keep separate discs for stainless steel?

Yes. A disc that has touched carbon steel carries iron onto stainless, which rusts later.
